Marvel’s ‘Loki’ Disney+ Series Gets Showrunner and Premise

Loki
Loki Laufeyson wound up being the breakout character of the Thor movies (in no small part due to his role in The Avengers), so it wasn’t all that surprising when we first learned about the Marvel Studios television shows that he’d be one of the first characters to get his own miniseries. The Tom Hiddleston-led series just got a major status update by means of finding its showrunner, and now there’s a new description about the show’s premise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Loki series now has a showrunner in Michael Waldron. The Rick and Morty scribe will executive produce the series and write the first episode. THR have heard that the series is a prequel to the first Thor, and that it will “follow Loki as the trickster and shape-shifter pops up throughout human history as an unlikely influencer on historical events”. Whether those events are confined to Midgard (Earth) remains to be seen, but suffice to say, Loki’s story being the Marvel equivalent of Forrest Gump seems like it would be shockingly appropriate.

Earlier rumors suggested that Tom Hiddleston may have had only a supporting role in the series and that most of it would be carried by an actor playing a younger version of the character. While there’s still a good chance that we’ll get flashbacks of a younger Loki, the premise described makes it more likely that Hiddleston will be doing the heavy lifting with the series. Given that Loki’s rather outspoken fandom are really in it for Hiddleston as opposed to the character he’s playing, it seems only appropriate that the show would be very much inclined to keep that portion of the Marvel audience happy.

Current projects confirmed to be in development for Disney+ include LokiThe Vision and Scarlet Witch, and Falcon and the Winter Soldier. These three shows are expected to arrive on the streaming service in 2020.
