‘The New Mutants’ Release Date May Be Pushed Back One Month

The New Mutants
Fox’s final X-Men movie before their acquisition by Disney is set to be The New Mutants, and that project has had a pretty ridiculous history of delays. Originally set to be released on April 13, 2018, Fox chose to push it back to February 22, 2019, and later to August 2, 2019. Well, it seems like audiences are going to have to wait a little longer to see this movie, as The New Mutants is now set for release on September 2, 2019.

This information comes Bleeding Cool’s coverage of the New York Toy Fair, where they found out that Hasbro is developing merchandise tied to The New Mutants. This is a first for a Fox-Marvel film in over a decade, with X-Men Origins: Wolverine being the most recent X-Men movie to get this kind of support; given the timing of Disney’s acquisition of Fox, it will also be the last. The Hasbro announcement simply included the message that the film was set to be released a month later than previously expected, culminating in what may be the movie’s third delay. It should be noted that as of right now, Fox currently has the film’s release date scheduled as August 2, 2019, suggesting that either a delay may happen or that Hasbro is mistaken.

The wacky story behind the post-production process on The New Mutants goes all the way back to 2018, a few months after the release of the first trailer. As it turns out, Fox had apparently screened the film and had determined that the movie needed to dial up the scare factor before releasing to audiences, and due to the schedules of the actors involved, they would have to delay significantly to make scheduling work. Therefore, the movie was pushed back all the way to February 22, 2019, which is less than a week from now. For whatever reason, they decided to stretch things out even more by placing the movie’s release date to August 2, 2019, and if Hasbro’s new date is accurate, then now we’ve got news that it’s being pushed a month later.

Aside from Anya Taylor-Joy, Henry Zaga, and Blu Hunt, the movie also stars Maisie Williams and Charlie Heaton, who were in the midst of filming Game of Thrones Season 8 and Stranger Things 3 respectively during the time that typically would have been given to reshoots. So that part of the delay was justified. But further pushbacks seem more and more intriguing, especially considering that the movie was filmed in part with IMAX cameras. Some have speculated that the movie could be sent to Hulu instead of releasing theatrically, which is not off-the-table at this point. In fact, the idea that the movie could open on a Monday would lend toward the idea of it being sent to Hulu instead of theaters. In any case, some transparency from Fox on the status of the oft-delayed movie would be greatly appreciated at this point in time.

The New Mutants will be released on either on August 2, 2019, or September 2, 2019.
