Red Sonja Movie On Hold After Bryan Singer Allegations

Red Sonja
Millennium Films has put its Red Sonja movie adaption on hold as it deals with the sexual assault allegations against Bryan Singer, who had signed on to direct the project in a $10M deal.

The studio has been trying to get the film made for over a decade, and finally put it on the slate last year at the American Film Market. Now, Millennium has told Deadline that ‘The project is not on the slate at the moment and is not for sale at the EFM in Berlin.”

Deadline also reports that Bryan Singer has not yet been removed from the production, but the timing of Millennium’s announcement does suggest that they are not comfortable moving forward with this film with Singer at the helm right now. Whether or not that means Millennium intends to remove the director from Red Sonja altogether, or wait until the allegations blow over, is unclear. Avi Lerner, CEO of Millennium Films, walked back his comments that had praised Bryan Singer in January, saying his comments ‘came out the wrong way’. Lerner himself has been accused of sexual misconduct and encouraging a culture of misogyny at the workplace, to the point where Millennium is facing a class-action lawsuit.

It’s true that the world is beginning to take notice of the allegations. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation has pulled Bohemian Rhapsody from all of their nominations and BATFA suspended Bryan Singer’s nomination for Bohemian Rhapsody in the Outstanding British Film Category. The film itself is still in contention though, and the other two people nominated on its behalf remain eligible.

Red Sonja was expected to begin shooting in Bulgaria this year, but without a cast and a dark cloud over Bryan Singer’s future, it doesn’t look like filming will proceed as scheduled.
