‘Captain Marvel’ TV Spot Alludes to Captain America

Captain Marvel
In the newest TV Spot for Captain Marvel, the trailer treats her as “a new Captain” in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, possibly cementing her place as the new “Captain America”-type leader of the Avengers after the character is presumably retired with Avengers: Endgame.

There’s quite a bit of new footage tucked into here, including a scene of Carol Danvers giving Nick Fury sass, and a shot of the Skrull leader Talos in his human disguise. You can see the ad below:

The comparison between Steve Rogers and Carol Danvers is probably not too far off-base, all things considered. The first Captain America movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a period piece, set in the mid-Forties during World War II, while Captain Marvel is set in the mid-Nineties. Both films involve the Tesseract as a major plot device, with it being sought by HYDRA in Captain America’s first adventure, and housed by S.H.I.E.L.D. in Captain Marvel’s (where it seems possible that both the Kree and the Skrulls alike are after it). Nick Fury is in both movies, although it seems as though his role in Captain Marvel is much more substantive than his cameo at the very end of Captain America: The First Avenger was.

It certainly seems interesting to hear this comparison be made, though. The execs at Marvel Studios have been transparent about this movie, along with Avengers: Endgame, as being crucial toward establishing Captain Marvel as the new face of the franchise. That seems inherently risky, considering that the first two trailers were met with mixed reception from longtime fans. However, Marvel Studios didn’t get to the point where they’re at right now in Hollywood without taking those kinds of risks, and by now it’s pretty clear that they know exactly what they’re doing.

Captain Marvel will be released on March 8, 2019.
