The CW Renews All ‘Arrowverse’ Shows and More

Arrowverse
The CW ended last week on a high note, granting early renewals to ten of their signature series, including all of their DC Arrowverse shows.

Speaking at the Television Critics Association Press Tour, The CW’s President Mark Pedowitz said “The early renewal of these signature CW series gives us a head start on laying out the 2019-2020 season, and this is just the beginning. These shows provide a strong foundation for our multiplatform programming strategy, and we look forward to building on this with even more returning and new shows as we approach the May upfront.”

The early renewals mean that Arrow will be returning for an eighth season, whilst The Flash races into it’s sixth season, and both Supergirl and Legends of Tomorrow are coming back for season five. In addition to the four Arrowverse shows, The CW also renewed Black Lightning for a third season, meaning all five DC series will be returning. Plus, with Crisis on Infinite Earths coming later this year, there’s always the possibility that Black Lightning could join the Arrowverse next season.

Speaking of Crisis, talking with reporters after the panel Pedowitz confirmed that this year’s crossover will be the “biggest and most complicated” that they have ever done, and, like in the comics, fans should prepare for some of the heroes to die in the fight to save the multiverse. And don’t expect any guest appearance from Titans or any of Greg Berlanti’s other DC Universe shows. Much like DC Films, the DC Universe series exist in their own universe and no crossovers with the Arrowverse are planned. Of course I’m still crossing my fingers for some nice Easter Eggs during the event.

Outside of DC, The CW renewed Riverdale for a fourth season, ordered second seasons for both Charmed and Legacies, and an incredible fifteenth season for Supernatural!

In addition to the five returning DC shows, The CW is expected to add a sixth. Batwoman was recently given a pilot order, with David Nutter directing, and is highly expected to received a full series pick up when The CW announces it’s full Fall line up in May. And there’s still room for more!

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pedowitz believes “We haven’t hit that saturation point,” but did go on to note that the network had no yet decided whether or not all six shows would air concurrently. And whilst all of the Arrowverse has been renewed, for some shows it could be their final season. “Things will age,” Pedowitz said, “and we want to get the next generation of shows to keep The CW DC Universe going for as long as possible.” He then went on to note that any decisions about final seasons will likely come around the time of May’s upfront presentations. Which is actually good news as it means the show runners will know whether or not this is their final season and can plan accordingly.

All ten of the renewed series are currently airing on The CW.
