Taika Waititi Wants in on Another Marvel Film, But Not ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’

Marvel
Thor: Ragnarok director and actor Taika Waititi wants to direct another Marvel movie, but he’s drawing the line at Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Speaking to representatives at The Wrap, Waititi explained that he is very much interested in continuing to work with Marvel Studios after a successful first outing that rejuvenated the character of Thor Odinson.

“I’m hanging out with [Marvel] still. Talking about new stuff, but I don’t know what that might be yet. I want to do another movie.”

Waititi did explain that there was one Marvel project that he felt was off-limits, and it was Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which he declined to direct out of respect for James Gunn:

“Nope. Not doing that movie… For me, that’s James’ film. Going into something like that, which has got his stamp all over it, it would feel like going into someone’s house and saying ‘Hey, I’m your new dad.'”

Insider Charles Murphy (who writes for That Hashtag Show) has added an important detail into the fold as well. According to Murphy, Waititi is indeed developing a mystery project for Marvel Studios that he can’t talk about right now, but there’s currently no indication as to what it might be:

While there are some who believe that no director in all of Hollywood can take over Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in the wake of Gunn’s unexpected firing, the thing is that the franchise is one that’s incredibly lucrative for Marvel Studios, and with an increasing focus on Marvel Cosmic stories, a conclusion to the trilogy should be an effective way of ushering the Hollywood giant’s new era of comic book movies, alongside the presumed sequel to Captain Marvel that’s expected to happen in 2022 if the first one is a hit.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is in development at Marvel Studios. The project is without a director right now, but James Gunn’s script for the project is being used as the basis for the movie that will be made.
