‘Legion’ to End with Season Three

Legion
Maybe it was inevitable with Disney’s purchase of Fox, but today at the Television Critics Association press tour, FX confirm that the upcoming third season of the channel’s X-Men spin-off Legion will be the show’s last.

There is still one silver lining for fans as Deadline reports that, according to FX’s John Landgraf, this is how the show’s creator, Noah Hawley, always envisioned it. Hawley was interested in developing a Doctor Doom film around this time, and while there’s no indication that it could still be made, it’s likely that he intended to shift his creative focus toward making something like that. It remains to be seen if Hawley’s pitch will be revised into being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that door is open since one of the Avengers: Endgame co-directors would like to see it happen.

Legion‘s second season ended with David (Dan Stevens) taking a villainous turn, and the final season will see Syd (Rachel Keller) rising up to be the hero of the series and maybe the only one who can help steer David back to being the good man he was. Whatever happens, Legion is sure to take fans through many unexpected twists and turns before the story is done. In addition to Stevens and Keller, the series also stars Aubrey Plaza, Bill Irwin, Jean Smart, Jemaine Clement, Hamish Linklater, and Navid Negahban.

As of right now, there is no word on how Fox’s The Gifted will be impacted by Disney’s acquisition of Fox. It’s certainly possible that, like Legion, the show will have more than enough time to wrap up regardless of how Disney and Marvel Studios proceed. With the Disney-Fox merger set to complete in the first half of this year, integrating the X-Men franchise into the MCU is something that is still years away, so there’s still plenty of time to greenlight a third season of the show and potentially do a fourth season if it’s needed.

No date has been set, but Legion‘s final season is expected to premiere this Spring on FX.
