‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Season 6 Teaser (Kinda) Reveals Coulson’s Return

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The first look at the sixth season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has been revealed, which features the return of Phil Coulson! …But not quite in the way that you were expecting. From the looks of things, the new season of the Marvel show won’t see any of the lead cast get dusted by Thanos, but it will instead help establish the new status quo for the Marvel Cinematic Universe after Avengers: Endgame.

Last we left off the agents, Phil Coulson went to Tahiti to spend his last few days with Melinda May before succumbing to the same injury that killed him in The Avengers. Coulson ceded leadership to Alphonso “Mack” MacKenzie as the new leader of his S.H.I.E.L.D. team as the world braced itself for the arrival of Thanos on Earth. However, those hoping for Coulson to miraculously recover are in for a grim reality: as the trailer states, “Agent Coulson is dead.” Melinda May returns to the fold as the crew prepares to rescue a cryogenically-frozen Leopold Fitz from deep space. You can view the trailer below:

So yeah, a lot more questions were raised than any were answered. The superpowered individuals shown have yet to be identified, but given that the show is continuing to have a cosmic focus, it can be presumed that they’re not human. Strangest of all is what appears to be a Coulson doppelgänger at the very end… Although he has no knowledge of who Phil Coulson really is. Marvel’s slate of 2019 movies (Captain Marvel, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: Far From Home) – which will all air prior to the show’s return – will certainly provide context about the future of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the cosmic part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it doesn’t seem like they’ll give us any hints on what to texpect for this season. (This might be a reach, but could May mentioning that she and Coulson had more time than they expected hint at an Avengers: Endgame cameo?)

This season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will have a shorter order this time around with 13 episodes, conserving budget by roughly halving the episode count ordered in prior seasons. It certainly looks like they’re spending that money where it counts, as the visuals shown here seem to be better than they were in Season 5 (which was filmed on the tightest budget that the series has had yet).

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 6 will air in July 2019. The show has also been renewed for a Season 7, which does not yet have a release window.
