Nicolas Cage is Set to Star in an H. P. Lovecraft Adaptation

In a sentence that we never thought that we’d type, Nicolas Cage is set to star in an adaptation of H. P. Lovecraft’s The Colour out of Space. The movie will reunite Cage with the producers of Mandy, an independent horror film featuring one of his most unforgettable performances in recent memory.

The Wrap reveals that South African director Richard Stanley is set to offer his spin on one of Lovecraft’s more well-known stories with the guiding hand of Elijah Wood’s horror-focused company SpectreVision producing. Stanley has picked Cage to star in the film, assembling a supporting cast that includes Joely Richardson, Tommy Chong, Elliot Knight, Julian Hilliard and Q’Orianka. Filming begins in February.

When asked about the film, SpectreVision producer Daniel Noah explained that he felt honored to assemble a cast to adapt one of Lovecraft’s most well-regarded works. Noah praised Richard Stanley, who is directing a film for the first time in 20 years, and notes that he can’t wait to bring this story to the big screen:

“Lovecraft is the dark father of modern horror, and we have been searching for an adaptation that captures the true scope of his cosmic dread for years. Richard Stanley – a wizard in his own right – will at long last bring Lovecraft’s humbling power to the screen unfiltered.”

Based on Lovecraft’s novella of the same name, The Colour out of Space revolves around a family that moves to a farm in order to live a simpler life in an increasingly-complicated world. Unfortunately, the Gardeners will get no such luck when a bizarre meteorite with an otherworldly glow crash-lands on their property. The extraterrestrial object progressively warps space-time and mutates the properties of living things and objects into bizarre, unnatural forms – including the Gardners themselves.

The Colour out of Space is in development, with no release window slated as of yet.
