Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie Reunite for Two More ‘Mission: Impossible’ Films

Mission: Impossible
Big news for Mission: Impossible fans has arrived, as news gets out that series star Tom Cruise and writer-director Christopher McQuarrie will be teaming up once again to handle not one, but two impossible missions, and they’ve chosen to accept them.

Variety has scooped a big story regarding Paramount’s most reliable franchise after Transformers and Star Trek ran into trouble in recent outings. According to the Hollywood trade, the creative team behind the last two movies in the series (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Mission: Impossible – Fallout) will be back for rounds seven and eight. Paramount decided to film the next two installments back-to-back as a way of saving money.

The move is not surprising, considering that Fallout was far and away the most successful installment of the series yet. It didn’t take long for the duo to confirm that they’d be getting started on the next (and potentially final) two movies in the series, as the two reached out to their fans via Twitter to confirm their involvement and when to expect their new films to release:

Though the studio did not confirm a start date for filming, or who will appear in these new films, sources in touch with Variety suggest that production on the two movies will begin later this year. Paramount want an early start to production in order for there to be plenty of breathing room between Summer 2020’s Tom Cruise movie, Top Gun: Maverick, and the two other Cruise-controlled blockbusters that they’ve got in the pipeline.

While this is good news for fans of the franchise, it’s a bit bittersweet for DC fans, as Warner Bros. were reportedly interested in putting McQuarrie behind the wheel of a project like Green Lantern Corps or a Superman sequel. By the time he could get to working on a DC Comics adaptation, McQuarrie could be a bit fatigued with all that franchise work, and he might choose to tackle something smaller. Thankfully, with a production schedule giving him plenty of time to wrap on the two Mission: Impossible films, he could just as easily be raring to go by the time the fourth film he’s directed in the series hits theaters.

Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 are set for release in the Summers of 2021 and 2022.
