‘Batwoman’ Pilot Moving Forward at CW

Batwoman

The Arrowverse is about to get a little bigger. Following Ruby Rose’s debut in last month’s Elseworlds event, The Hollywood Reporter have confirmed that The CW have officially given a pilot order for Batwoman with David Nutter to direct the inaugural episode.

The news comes as no surprise, with a solo series for Batwoman first being reported last summer. Should the pilot be successful, Batwoman will become the fifth Arrowverse series and the sixth DC series airing concurrently on The CW. More importantly, it will be the first super hero series led by a lesbian character and starring an openly gay actress.

Nutter’s return as director is a welcome one. The Emmy Award winner has a long history with DC, having previously directed the pilot episodes for The FlashArrow, and Smallville, along with multiple episodes of Superboy where he made his directorial debut.

Following on from Elseworlds, the new series will have a very unique version of Gotham to explore. It’s a city without hope, where Batman and Bruce Wayne vanished three years ago. “It’s a dead city,” Marc Guggenheim told EW when discussing Elseworlds, “It’s the worst case scenario. The reason no one talks about Gotham is the city might as well be dead.” Kate Kane may be able to change all that, but she has her own challenges to face on the journey. And a Crisis looms on the horizon.

“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane (Rose) soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a saviour, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”

Batwoman, starring Ruby Rose as Kate Kane/Batwoman, comes from executive producers Greg Berlanti and Caroline Dries, who also acts as showrunner and writer. Should Batwoman receive a series pick up, expect it to be part of The CW’s Fall line up later this year.
