Box Office Weekend – ‘Ralph’ and ‘Creed’ Deliver a Knockout Thanksgiving

Box Office
Theater chains have plenty to be thankful for over the last five days, as the only turkey of this week’s new releases was predictably Robin Hood, while Ralph Breaks the Internet and Creed II alike set box office records.

Turkey Day Weekend’s twin sequels both topped the box office, with Ralph Breaks the Internet taking home the prize of first place with a $84M+ haul over five days, and also scoring the second-highest opening for a five-day Thanksgiving release for an animated feature, only behind Frozen. Meanwhile, Creed II proved itself the underdog by coming in second place with $55M+ over five days, and being biggest live-action five-day Thanksgiving opening, already surpassing its $50M budget. The last of the three new releases, Lionsgate’s Robin Hood, predictably tanked at the box office with a mere $14M+ total over five days. Against an estimated price tag between $90M and $100M, that’s a pretty poor showing overall, even for a new movie making use of an intellectual property made in the public domain.

In terms of holdovers, Fantastic Beasts narrowly beat The Grinch over the five-day period. The hold, while good for a holiday weekend, should be a little concerning for Warner Bros. and their future plans for the franchise, although international numbers on the movie being as strong as they are should be more than enough to put the second of five planned Harry Potter spin-offs in the realm of profitability. Both Instant Family and Bohemian Rhapsody had rises of over 20% over the past five days, which the former movie definitely needed and the latter movie got an additional boost from. Widows unfortunately did not see the kind of increased business that Instant Family had, but it appears that it held well enough that the movie can reach the break-even point.
