Soon after the reveal, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed with Warner Bros. that this is indeed the film’s actual title and not just Robbie having fun with fans on social media.

Honestly, I have mixed feelings on the title. On one hand, it suits Harley’s character perfectly. It’s the most Harley the title could be. Harley’s co-creator, Paul Dini, even noted how the title, and it’s reveal, called back to how he would often have the character “scribble nonsense and wacky thoughts all over things”, calling it “classic Quinnsanity”.

On the other hand, it feels a little like it’s trying too hard to get Harley’s name in the title. Robbie’s Harley Quinn is one of the biggest selling points of the movie, so it’s perfectly understandable that Warner Bros. and DC Films would want her name in the title. This way just feels a little too much of a mouthful.

Love it or hate it, the title certainly suggests that the movie will find Harley in a new stage of her life. Suicide Squad ended with Joker breaking Harley out of Belle Reve Penitentiary, saying “Let’s go home.” Birds of Prey‘s full title certainly suggests a break up is on the cards for the iconic couple, though whether or not Jared Leto’s Joker will appear in the movie is currently unknown.

It’s not a surprising move. Harley’s break up with the Joker was a big, and arguably overdue, moment for her in the comics and afterwards her character flourished. On film Robbie’s Harley Quinn has been one of the breakout characters of the DC Universe, so it’s natural that WB and DC would want to move her character out of an abusive relationship with the Joker and allow her to grow and develop on her own.

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is due for release February 7th 2020.
