‘Avengers 4’: Frank Grillo Confirms Return as Crossbones

Avengers
Avengers: Annihilation will see the return of Frank Grillo’s character (Brock Rumlow, also known as Crossbones), according to the actor himself.

Grillo has previously dropped hints suggesting that his involvement with Marvel Studios didn’t end with Captain America: Civil War, where his character killed himself with a suicide bomb in an attempt to kill Captain America before Scarlet Witch warped him away, which led to a substantial amount of collateral damage taking place. On the 241st and latest episode of the UFC Unfiltered Podcast, which features an interview with Grillo, he revealed that his character will be making a return in a flashback about nineteen into the podcast (hat tip MCU Cosmic):

“He makes an appearance in the next Avengers movie, but it’s a flashback.”

Given that time travel has long been speculated to be a major component of the fourth Avengers movie (something supported by Ant-Man and the Wasp‘s offhanded mention about “Time Vortexes”), it’s entirely possible that this “flashback” is not actually that so much as an instance of some of the characters utilizing time travel as a way to alter the past, and one such instance involves Crossbones. Perhaps Crossbones will somehow live in a revised timeline, or perhaps the timeline will be changed so that Wanda doesn’t end up getting innocent people killed, preventing the events that lead to the Avengers fracturing as a team.

That being said, Crossbones surviving doesn’t seem particularly likely, as Grillo has explicitly stated that he doesn’t intend to do another Marvel Studios movie after this (though the character could be portrayed by a new actor if he is needed). It doesn’t sound like it’ll be a huge role, either. Grillo also hinted that he may have just violated an NDA by revealing this information, which is a pretty big no-no with a secretive company like Disney. In any case, it seems as though the next Avengers movie will revisit the previous Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, which should make for an interesting treat for longtime fans of the series.

Avengers: Annihilation will be released on May 3, 2019.
