DEBUNKED: ‘Superman’ TV Series Being Developed

With Henry Cavill’s future as the Man of Steel on the big screen in question for the time being, a new rumor suggests that Warner Bros. are interested in giving audiences their Superman fix on the small screen. If this report is true, then fans will definitely want to check out the Arrowverse’s big Elseworlds crossover on The CW.

FandomWire is reporting that, as of right now, the powers that be at DC want to try their hand at bringing Tyler Hoechlin’s version of Man of Tomorrow, first seen on Supergirl, to have his own spin-off. Since DC TV and DC Films tend not to use the same characters, this would signal that the movie division does not have any major plans for Superman as of right now. However, Superman is a big factor in the forthcoming Elseworlds crossover, where he’ll don the black suit and where Elizabeth Tulloch’s version of Lois Lane will make her debut. FandomWire is suggesting that Elseworlds will serve as a backdoor pilot for a potential Superman show in the same way that it will serve as a backdoor pilot for Batwoman starring Ruby Rose. As of right now, development on the possible Superman series will depend heavily upon how Elseworlds is received.

A while ago, DC were developing a Metropolis show in the vein of Gotham, which is to say a show about the mythology of a certain superhero coming into focus before that character became a superhero (in Gotham‘s case, it was Batman, while in Metropolis‘s case, it presumably would have been Superman, even as Krypton covers similar ground). Perhaps part of the reason that the series stopped being developed for the DC Universe streaming service had to do with the possibility that a contemporary take at a Superman show was also in early development. DC Films are in no rush to bring the character back to the big screen, as gossip indicates that they want to focus on standalones (most of which will be part of the same universe) to flesh out the setting before they even think about doing another big crossover. For now, we can only hope that the Last Son of Krypton gets another shot, as the world needs a Superman now more than ever.

Sad news arrives as it turns out that this rumor didn’t have any real merit to it, according to Hollywood insiders:

For now, fans can look forward to seeing Superman on the Elseworlds special and possibly future episodes of Supergirl.
