Lex Luthor is Coming to ‘Supergirl’

Lex Luthor
The shadow of Lex Luthor has hung over Lena (Katie McGrath) since she first arrived in National City, determined to make a fresh start for herself and her family name. So how will she react when she comes face to face with her older brother? We’re about to find out as Lex is coming to Supergirl!

Executive producers Robert Rovner and Jessica Queller announced the news in a joint statement, saying “We’re beyond excited to introduce iconic villain, Lex Luthor, to Supergirl and to weave him into our story this season. We’ve talked about having Lex on the show since its inception and we’re excited to have him finally arrive. We can’t wait for him to shake things up in National City and watch him go toe to toe with not only Supergirl, but his sister Lena Luthor.”

Whilst Lex has appeared in flashbacks (in season two’s Luthors) this will be the first time that he has appeared in the present day Arrowverse. Until now Lex has been in jail, serving multiple life sentences, following his defeat by Superman. Will he be released or will he escape? That remains to be seen, as does who will be portraying the iconic villain. Casting for the role is expected to begin shortly.

Last month Smallville‘s Michael Rosenbaum joked that he wanted his job back following reports that Henry Cavill was not returning as Superman;

Whilst he was clearly joking, many fans, myself included, would love to see Rosenbaum return to the role. Such a return though, whilst not impossible, is extremely unlikely.

Producers have confirmed that Lex will make his debut when Supergirl returns in 2019, meaning he will not be a part of the Elseworlds crossover event that sees the return of Superman and the debut of Lois Lane.

Hopefully Lex coming to town means we might also get to see more of Lois and Clark in the back half of Supergirl‘s fourth season. After all, Superman is sure to have something to say about his old enemy being back on the streets.

Supergirl is currently airing on The CW.
