‘Black Panther 2’: Ryan Coogler Set to Write and Direct

Black Panther
A new report suggests that Ryan Coogler will write and direct the sequel to Black Panther, even though Marvel has yet to officially announce the film.

The Hollywood Reporter has broken the (rather unsurprising) story that the writer and director of an incredibly-successful franchise movie that has been showered with praise would be back to do another one. In all likelihood, Marvel probably would have announced this immediately after Black Panther‘s $200M+ opening weekend and $1.3B+ global take, but they have committed to not revealing their slate of movies and their respective release dates past 2019’s lineup of Captain MarvelAvengers: Annihilation, and Spider-Man: Far From Home (the last of which was revealed by Sony – who are co-producing the film – in spite of one of Avengers: Infinity War‘s biggest spoilers raising questions about how it will be promoted).

The reason for Marvel’s silence on the front of the inevitable Black Panther seems to be based entirely around the idea of keeping Avengers spoilers from getting out (especially given what happens in Infinity War raises a number of questions about how a Black Panther sequel would work). In any case, the deal was made a while ago, and Coogler will indeed be working on another movie in the series. THR specifically adds that the movie is expected to begin production in either late 2019 or early 2020, with writing on the script set to start next year. For now, Coogler is working on directing Wrong Answer, which stars frequent collaborator Michael B. Jordan.

Black Panther 2 does not have a release date, and it has not been officially announced by Marvel Studios. There is, however, a February 12, 2021 Marvel movie release date that seems like it would be ideal for the movie to fill. However, the prior Marvel release date (November 6, 2020) seems like a more likely choice if the film’s production timeline truly begins next year.
