RUMOR: ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Sequel Possibly Titled ‘Avengers: Annihilation’

Avengers: Annihilation
Avengers 4‘s official title has been the subject of quite a bit of speculation, as it’s been a mystery ever since the studio decided to drop the Avengers: Infinity War – Part One and Avengers: Infinity War – Part Two naming convention. As it turns out, the subtitle may share a name with a major comic book event: Annihilation.

MCU Cosmic has gone public with a rumor that the closing chapter of the first three phases of Marvel movies will be known as Avengers: Annihilation. However, don’t expect it to be a direct adaptation of that story arc in the slightest, given that it mainly involves Fox-owned characters that Marvel Studios did not have the rights to at the time filming began, including Silver Surfer, Super-Skrull, Galactus, and Annihilus (all tied to the Fantastic Four IP, which Fox have owned for years but have barely used, especially on the cosmic side of things). It’s entirely likely that we could see an adaptation of the event over a decade from now after those characters have been integrated into the setting, but I digress.

The Russo Brothers previously teased that the name of the movie should worry fans about the fate of certain characters a few weeks prior to the release of Infinity War, and this kind of a title would keep audiences on the edge of their seat even with the presumption that many characters will come back from the dead in the back of their minds. But looking back at an earlier hint does suggest that Avengers: Annihilation could be the title:

Looking at the easel, along with the stepladder, is a plausible hint that the movie could be abbreviated as AA – which would quite nicely suit Avengers: Annihilation. (They’re clearly not going to name the movie after the Nachi camera in the background.) The film’s synopsis certainly indicates that the amount of sacrifices that will need to be made to save the entire universe will be devastating:

“A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.”

Half of all life in the universe, of course, was annihilated during the events of Infinity War, including heroes like Heimdall, Loki, Gamora, the Vision, the Winter Soldier, Black Panther, Groot, Scarlet Witch, Falcon, Mantis, Drax the Destroyer, Star-Lord, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man, Maria Hill, and Nick Fury. So perhaps the title might not just allude just to the devastation to come, but that which has already happened.

I should reiterate that this still has yet to be officially confirmed, but this is a source that accurately broke the story that a film based on the obscure Marvel property The Eternals was in development. We’ll be sure to keep you covered at Movie News Net for more information on the closing chapter of over a decade of Marvel Studios movies.

Avengers 4 will be released on May 3, 2019.
