DC Universe Kicks Off NYCC With ‘Titans’ Premiere, ‘Harley Quinn’ Trailer and More

DC Universe
DC Universe kicked off New York Comic Con in style last night with the world premiere of Titans, a first look at next year’s Harley Quinn animated series, and more.

Harley Quinn

The biggest news out of last night’s panel was an unexpected trailer for Harley Quinn and the announcement that Kaley Cuoco (The Big Bang Theory) would be voicing Harley and serving as an executive producer on the series. After Cuoco came out on stage, the rest of the voice cast for the series was announced, including Lake Bell as Poison Ivy, Alan Tudyk (in his second DC Universe series), Chris Meloni, Giancarlo Esposito, Jason Alexander, JB Smoove, Jim Rash, Natalie Morales, Ron Funches, Tony Hale, Wanda Sykes, and Diedrich Bader (Batman: The Brave and The Bold) returning as Batman.

The short teaser features Harley Quinn in Arkham Asylum, making the case for her new series to an unimpressed Poison Ivy.

Setting the tone for the adult comedy series, Harley promises viewers will “piss themselves”, declares the DCEU’s (former) dark and gritty tone isn’t for her, and even manages to get in a quick dig on Deadpool’s unreleased animated series.

Doom Patrol

Doom Patrol gained a new team member as it was announced that Matt Bomer had joined the cast. Ahead of the Titans premiere Brendan Fraser revealed that Bomer would be voicing Negative Man and portraying his civilian identity, Larry Trainor, with Matthew Zuk providing the physical performance for Negative Man.

Fraser also revealed a first look at Robotman, which was capture by DCUTitans and shared on Twitter;

I have to admit, the costume looks really impressive.

Titans

The main event was, of course, the world premiere of Titans. The NYCC audience was treated to the first two episodes of DC Universe’s first original series and, whilst reviews aren’t out yet, ComicBook.com has reported reactions that are a far cry from the mixed/negative reception that the first trailer received at SDCC, with fans praising the premiere and the direction the show seems to be heading.

It seems that DC loves the show as well, with executive producers Geoff Johns and John Fawcett confirming that the show has already been picked up for a second season. “I think that shows the faith that DC Universe has in the show and in this amazing cast here and the property,” Johns told the audience, “We know Season 2 already. We know everything. We actually know all the characters for Season 2. We know the story of Season 2. Marv Wolfman will be very happy with Season 2.”

And it doesn’t stop there. Executive producer Akiva Goldsman confirmed that from the beginning the creative team had broad plans for a third season as well, allowing them to sow seeds that will, hopefully, bear fruit in later seasons.

As for future cross overs between the DC Universe shows, Geoff Johns wasn’t ruling anything out. Like the CW’s shows, the DC Universe series exist in a multiverse. So whilst shows like Swamp Thing and Stargirl may or may not take place on the same earth as Titans and Doom Patrol, that won’t stop them from crossing over if the right story comes along. “It is much like the multiverse in the comics,” Johns said, “and I don’t think there’s any hard, fast rules saying that Stargirl and Swamp Thing aren’t in the same universe as Titans and Doom Patrol. Right now I’m just working on Stargirl and trying to make Stargirl the best Stargirl TV show it can possibly be. Whether it connects to another show down the line is open-ended.”

Titans will premiere on DC Universe next Friday and soon after on Netflix worldwide. Doom Patrol and Harley Quinn are both due to premiere on DC Universe next year.
