‘Space Jam’ Sequel is Finally in the Works

Fresh off his success with this year’s Black Panther, Ryan Coogler is set to produce the long awaited sequel to this unlikely Looney Tunes and NBA crossover. Meanwhile, Lebron James will be getting his first starring role.

In an exclusive with the Hollywood Reporter, L.A. Lakers forward Lebron James revealed his involvement with the project.

The original Space Jam premiered in 1996, and combined the talents of professional NBA players, comedians, and animated Looney Tunes characters in a wacky story about a pivotal inter-galactic basketball game.

Rumors of a potential sequel have floated around from a long time, ranging from featuring Tiger Woods to even a short teaser in 2016 with the hashtag #MonstarsBack.

James has been rumored to be involved with the project since 2014, though that is likely simply due to the ongoing debate between his fans and Jordan’s over who is the “greatest of all time”. However, today is the first time that James has been officially linked to the film, and is also the first actual confirmation that the project exists in general.

James praised Coogler’s work in diversifying Marvel’s cinematic universe with Black Panther, while also speaking about his excitement to work with the producer.

“The Space Jam collaboration is so much more than just me and the Looney Tunes getting together and doing this movie. It’s so much bigger. I’d just love for kids to understand how empowered they can feel and how empowered they can be if they don’t just give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did that for a lot of people.”

Terence Nance of HBO’s Random Acts of Flyness will direct the film.
