Is Shane West Playing Bane on ‘Gotham’?

Gotham
Deadline announced yesterday that Shane West (Nikita, Salam) has joined the cast of Gotham in a key recurring role in the Batman prequel’s final season. And it might just be the man who broke the bat.

According to Deadline, West has been cast as Eduardo Dorrance, “an old Army buddy of Jim Gordon’s (Ben McKenzie). Having lost touch with Jim after the war, Dorrance returns to Gotham years later, leading a team of elite soldiers with the goal of helping Gordon restore order to No Man’s Land. But as the scales fall from Gordon’s eyes, he realizes Dorrance’s true intentions for Gotham are much darker and more evil than he could have believed.”

So how does this link him to Bane? Nothing has been said officially, but Deadline point out that Eduardo is very likely related to the comics’ Sir Edmund Dorrance, aka King Snake, aka Bane’s father. Add to this the fact that Spoiler TV revealed last month that episode eight of the final season will be called ‘I Am Bane’ and it’s not very hard to come to the conclusion that West’s Eduardo Dorrance, even if he doesn’t start out as the infamous villain, will become Bane as the series heads towards it’s conclusion.

This approach would fit with the origin theme of the series, which has followed many of the Batman universe’s most famous heroes and villains on their journeys to becoming the icons we all know.

If West is playing Bane, it wouldn’t be the first time we’ve seen the character leading an army of soldiers into the No Man’s Land of Gotham. Tom Hardy’s Bane in The Dark Knight Rises led a similar army, though his version of the character came at the end of Batman’s career rather than at its dawn.

It’s unlikely that Gotham will adapt the famous Knightfall story arc that introduced Bane, after all Bruce isn’t even Batman (yet!), but it may pay homage to it, much like it did The Killing Joke at the end of last season. Who knows, maybe being broken by Bane is what will lead to Bruce rising as Batman.

Gotham returns to FOX for it’s final season next Spring.
