‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Production on Hold

Guardians of the Galaxy
The fallout over the firing of James Gunn continues as Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s production was reportedly halted completely. As the studio looks to find another director, Marvel are regrouping to figure out where the third film – said to be incredibly important to the future of Marvel’s film slate – will need to go.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the third film in Marvel’s unexpectedly popular series about space-faring superheroes won’t be making its planned January 2020 start date, as crew members who were being hired to take care of some pre-production work have been dismissed from the project.

It should go without saying that this shift in production does not mean that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is cancelled in any way, shape, or form. While Gunn isn’t directing, his script is still being used as the basis for the film that they will make, although it’s likely that whatever new director who will take over the project could make a few revisions. With any luck, the film should still be released in 2020 at a later point in the year; if not, then a May 2021 release window seems like it could be plausible.

It’s been suggested that the new director for the movie will be someone who likely hasn’t worked with Marvel Studios as of yet, due to prominent MCU directors like Joe and Anthony Russo, Jon Favreau, and Jon Watts being busy with other projects. However, Taika Waititi has apparently met with Marvel Studios recently for an upcoming project; while some fans are hopeful that it will be the Guardians trilogy-capper, it’s also possible that he could be meeting for a completely different project like The Eternals.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was unofficially scheduled to be released on May 1, 2020, although that may change with a delay in the start of the film’s production.
