Disney Casts Ling and Po for Live Action ‘Mulan’

Mulan
Disney’s Mulan began production this week, and now Deadline are reporting some casting news that will make fans of the animated classic extremely happy.  Jimmy Wong and Doua Moua have joined the cast as Ling and Chien-Po.

The popular characters are two of a trio of soldiers who, whilst initially antagonistic, befriended Mulan and helped her in her fight to save China. With the addition of Chum Ehelepola and Utkarsh Ambudkar’s Ramtish and Skatch, and in light of the other changes to the characters, it was looking like the fan favorite trio hadn’t made the cut. Happily we now know that’s not the case. It only remains to be seen if Yao, the self proclaimed “King of the rock”, will be joining them on this new adventure. Hopefully this latest casting news means that he will be.

The movie’s director, Niko Caro also celebrated the start of production by revealing the first behind the scenes image on Instagram. The shot features Liu Yifei’s Mulan in what looks to be the iconic Reflection scene. Though the film isn’t a musical, I certainly hope we get to hear some of the melodies in the score, especially in scenes such as this, where the imagery is so linked with the music in everyone’s memories.

Mulan is the epic adventure of a fearless young woman who masquerades as a man in order to fight Northern Invaders attacking China. The eldest daughter of an honored warrior, Hua Mulan is spirited, determined and quick on her feet. When the Emperor issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army, she steps in to take the place of her ailing father, Hua Jun, becoming one of China’s greatest warriors ever.

Mulan is due for release March 27th 2020.
