Geoff Johns Announces ‘Stargirl’ for DC Universe

Stargirl
During his spotlight panel at SDCC, Geoff Johns announced that Stargirl is in development for the DC Universe streaming service!

Speaking to a packed SDCC crowd, Johns revealed that he, along with his Mad Ghost production company, would be both writing and producing the new live action series.

“Stargirl is the doorway into a team that’s very close to my heart, the JSA. It’s all about her bringing back the legacy of the JSA.”

Yes, the JSA are coming to the DC Universe!

“We’ve already talked about how she’s going to fight and what the Cosmic Staff does, what the other JSA members are going to look like.”

This isn’t the first time Stargirl has graced the small screen. She first appeared on the fan favorite animated series Justice League Unlimited, before making her live action debut in Smallville, in the Absolute Justice special written by Geoff Johns. More recently, Stargirl has been seen in both Legends of Tomorrow (along with the JSA) and Justice League Action.

The character holds a special place in Johns’ heart. Based on his late sister, Stargirl was the first character that he created for DC Comics. In fact, he loves her so much it’s part of the reason he left his old job;

“I loved my job at DC at a desk, but with an opportunity like this with Stargirl and run my own show – this is the kind of opportunity I couldn’t have had if I stayed in my old role.”

Johns also promised that the tone would be lighter than the recently revealed Titans series, confirming that it will be PG-13 rated.

Stargirl is the tone of Superman: The Movie and Wonder Woman, that’s what we’re going for, it’s where I like to live the best.”

As for the JSA, they’ll be co-stars, this is Stargirl’s story. But that doesn’t mean they couldn’t get their own spin-off series if the demand is there.

DC Universe is set to launch this Fall with Titans. DC revealed today that the service will be priced at $7.99 per month or $74.99 per year. I wish I lived in the US because if you sign up during SDCC you could win a trip to the Aquaman premiere! Plus if you sign up now you get an additional three months free.

Johns’ quotes are thanks to CBR and Newsarama’s excellent live coverage of SDCC. Stay tuned to MNN for more DC Universe and Comic Con news throughout the weekend!
