‘Birds of Prey’ Cast of Characters Revealed

Birds Of Prey Harley Quinn
The Birds of Prey project from DC Films is moving forward at a rapid pace at Warner Bros., with Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) set to be part of an ensemble of female DC characters in an R-rated crime film. Now, a report suggests the finalized roster of lead characters that will be appearing alongside the Joker’s accomplice.

The Wrap reports that Birds of Prey (directed by Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson) will introduce four new characters that Quinn will appear alongside: Dinah Laurel Lance (Black Canary), Helena Bertinelli (Huntress), Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya. Here’s a quick rundown of who these characters are:

  • Harley Quinn: A former psychiatrist who was seduced by the Joker and was later exposed to the same ACE Chemical bath he had. Usually his partner-in-crime, Harley Quinn is apparently operating on her own at the start of the film after her earlier stint with Task Force X, the so-called Suicide Squad.
  • Black Canary: The daughter of a police officer father and a retired superhero mother. Black Canary is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant with the superhuman ability to screech at an ultrasonic level – her Canary Cry.
  • Huntress: A daughter of a Gotham City mob boss who saw her family murdered before her at a young age, later becoming a vigilante. Huntress makes use of hand-to-hand combat and bolt-firing weapons, such as her signature crossbow.
  • Cassandra Cain: The daughter of two assassins who turned away from that life. An expert martial artist, Cain is able to anticipate the next moves her opponents will make by analyzing their body language.
  • Renee Montoya: A skilled detective working for the Gotham City Police Department.

In addition, the villain of the film – who has not yet been identified – is stated to be a character from the Batman franchise who has not appeared in a live-action DC movie before. Some fans have speculated that this villain could be Roman Sionis, AKA Black Mask, who Suicide Squad director David Ayer teased as a villain for his Gotham City Sirens project. Since it looks like Birds of Prey is a reworked version of the Gotham City Sirens project that was in development (with Ayer seemingly having moved on from DC Films), using the alleged villain for that project as the villain of this new film would only make sense.

Worth noting is that Batgirl is apparently completely absent from this movie. The mantle is usually given to Barbara Gordon or Cassanda Cain, and while the latter is confirmed to appear in the film, she will not be using this alias. Given that a Batgirl script is in development from this movie’s writer, it’s possible that DC Films may be looking to make the character more accessible for younger viewers in a PG-13 feature. Furthermore, Matt Reeves may need Barbara Gordon for his planned trilogy of Batman movies.
