Neill Blomkamp to Direct ‘RoboCop Returns’, a Sequel to the Original Film

RoboCop
District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is setting his sights on the RoboCop franchise with a sequel written by the scribes of the original 1987 film.

Deadline broke the scoop that Blomkamp would be directing RoboCop Returns, a sequel to the original film continuity with writers Ed Neumeier and Michael Miner returning and the duo respectively producing and executive producing. Their previously-unproduced script will subsequently be rewritten by Justin Rhodes (who worked on Tim Miller’s Terminator sequel). Blomkamp is a longtime fan of the original film and has noted that the political satire elements of the story are what stuck with him the most.

The movie will apparently ignore the reboot with Joel Kinnaman, but right now, it’s unclear if the new movie will also be ignoring the first two sequels, the third film, or if it will treat all three movies in the trilogy as canon; given that Neumeier and Miner’s involvement in this film and their absence with the other movies, the first option looks possible. Also unclear is if Peter Weller (RoboCop, RoboCop 2) or Robert John Burke (RoboCop 3) will reprise the title character’s role. Plot details are limited thus far, but apparently it involves the city of Detroit on the brink of anarchy and the return of RoboCop is the only thing that can save a city that has fallen into decay.

RoboCop Returns is in development at MGM.
