Jon Bernthal to Return in Season 9 of The Walking Dead

It seems that recent rumours of Jon Bernthal appearing on the set of The Walking Dead appear to be true.

According to TV Line, Bernthal will be reprising his role as Shane one more time, though only for a single episode.

Shane began the show as Rick’s best friend, only to slowly turn against him after falling in love with Rick’s wife, Lori. The two constantly butted heads in Season 2 and finally Rick was forced to kill him. His son Carl then shot Shane’s zombified corpse minutes later.

You’d be forgiven for wondering how Shane could ever come back to the show after that, but this isn’t actually the first time the writers have had him cameo on the show after his death. Back in Season 3, he came back as a hallucination while Rick had one of his more unstable moments.

It stands to reason that this will happen again, particularly as Rick will be killed off in Season 9. It’s not difficult to imagine Rick lying there, slowly dying and having one last conversation with his old buddy turned rival before finally leaving the show for good.

Really, Shane’s cameo is likely part of the show’s farewell tour for Rick Grimes in his final episode. It wouldn’t be a shock if Carl turned up either for one last goodbye, before he goes.

What do you think? Is the return of Shane a nice touch or has The Walking Dead truly lost its way at this point? Let us know in the comments.
