‘Incredibles 2’ Saves the Day With a Huge Box Office Opening Weekend

Incredibles 2 had a record-breaking opening weekend, making it one of the highest box office openings of 2018, and scoring a bigger domestic launch than most other superhero movies.

It’s not surprising, considering fans have been clamouring for a sequel for the past decade. Positive reviews always meant the film was going to have a big opening weekend, but totals are even exceeding early projections.

According to Box Office Mojo, Incredibles 2 has made an incredible $180M in its first weekend. That officially makes it the sixth highest grossing film of 2018 after a single weekend, with a lot more time for the movie to climb up the box office charts. It is also the fifth largest superhero debut ever, narrowly beating Captain America: Civil War ($179.1m). The only superhero films to beat that total are Avengers: Infinity War, The Avengers, Black Panther and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Its closest competitor in the coming weeks might be Ant-Man and the Wasp, but considering that film is tracking at a significantly lower opening weekend in comparison, it stands to reason that The Incredibles 2 will be able to fend off any other big box office draws in the weeks to come. The next film that will provide any kind of direct competition is Hotel Transylvania 3, but with all the buzz around this film right now, it would be surprising to say the least if that steals top spot.
