First Trailer For ‘How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World’

The first trailer for the final chapter in the How to Train Your Dragon series is here.

As promised, DreamWorks Animation has released the first official trailer to How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.

As one can see, this first trailer is anything but a teaser. We get a pretty good sense of what the plot is going to be – Hiccup and Toothless must defend everything they’ve built together from outsiders – but hopefully the movie will have some exciting and unexpected twists and turns. How to Train Your Dragon 3 is still nearly a year away, so I’d be shocked to learn that we’ve seen everything this film has to offer from one trailer.

I am impressed with how beautiful the animation looks already though. It’s easy to be lenient on a trailer for not having perfect VFX because these effects will be polished up in the final film. But the animation in this trailer looks nothing short of stellar. The colors are beautiful, the images are crisp, the animation is smooth, and even the tiniest background features look incredibly detailed. If the final film looks even better than what we’ve seen from this trailer, then How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World may just be one of the best looking films of 2019.

Dean DeBlois returns to direct this installment in the How to Train Your Dragon series, which (as the trailer suggests) will also be the closing chapter of this franchise. Though I’m sure potential spin-offs or TV shows are still on the table at DreamWorks, I believe that this will film will ultimately conclude the arc that began with How to Train Your Dragon in 2010.

Per DreamWorks:

As Hiccup fulfills his dream of creating a peaceful dragon utopia, Toothless’ discovery of an untamed, elusive mate draws the dragon away. When danger mounts at home and Hiccup’s reign as village chief is tested, both dragon and rider must make impossible decisions to save their kind.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World stars Cate Blanchett, Jay Baruchel, T.J. Miller, Gerard Butler, Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Kit Harington, Djimon Hounsou, America Ferrera, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, F. Murray Abraham, and AJ Kane, and will be released on March 1, 2019.
