RUMOR: DC’s ‘Birds of Prey’ Will Feature Huntress and Black Canary

DC’s Birds of Prey is on the fast-track at Warner Bros., with Batgirl to serve as the lead character opposite Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. It’s being reported that two of the characters that will be joining Batgirl on her super-team have been decided upon: Huntress and Black Canary.

Omega Underground has reported that the two characters to round out Barbara Gordon/Batgirl’s all-girl team are Dinah Drake/Black Canary and Helena Rosa Bertinelli/The Huntress. So far, these are just rumors based on what they have heard, and there’s not a whole lot of information out there regarding the kinds of actresses who are being sought for these roles. While Batgirl has access to a lot of Batman’s wonderful toys, the Huntress specializes in hand-to-hand combat and makes use of more traditional means of combat like a staff or a crossbow. Meanwhile, Black Canary has the power to use ultrasonic screeching to damage the environment around her.

The Penguin is rumored to be an antagonist in the film, possibly ahead of a larger role in Matt Reeves’s The Batman. Characters suggested by outlets to not appear include Poison Ivy and Catwoman, who are presumably being saved for Gotham City Sirens.

Originally, screenwriter Christina Hodson presented two drafts of her script to Warner Bros., with the inclusion of Batgirl and Harley Quinn as the only constants between them. Both drafts were well-received by executives, and it appears that the draft which features the classic team lineup (which appeared in the original comics written by Chuck Dixon and Gail Simone) is what will serve as the template for the film itself. At this time, it’s not clear if Harley Quinn will be a part of this team as an ally of convenience or if she will face off against the team.

Birds of Prey does not have a release date slated (a 2020 release window is likely), but rumors indicate that the movie will begin filming in January of 2019.
