‘Gotham’ Renewed for Fifth and Final Season

A Dark Knight promises to rise over Gotham as FOX renews the Batman prequel for a final season.

It was touch and go for a moment, with Gotham‘s future at one point looking like it hinged on the renewal of Lethal Weapon, but FOX finally confirmed the series’ renewal less than twenty four hours before their Upfront presentation.

There were two caveats though. The fifth season will be both shorter and the show’s last. At this point it is unknown exactly how many episodes will make up the final season but many sites are speculating that thirteen will be the magic number as this would take the series to one hundred episodes, traditionally seen as the number of episodes required for syndication.

The best part about knowing this is the show’s final season is that it gives the creative team an end point that they can plan for. FOX have confirmed that this final season will focus on Bruce Wayne’s transformation from young vigilante to Batman, allowing David Mazouz to complete his character’s five year journey from Crime Alley to Caped Crusader.

Though the focus may be on Bruce’s journey, he likely won’t be the only one transforming in the final season. Hopefully we will get to see Camren Bicondova’s Selina complete her journey to Catwoman and Ben McKenzie growing Gordon’s traditional moustache as well. And maybe, just maybe, Cameron Monaghan will finally get to call himself the Joker before the series ends.

Gotham‘s final season will air on FOX in Spring 2019.
